It was in 1925 that two gentlemen in Erie, Pennsylvania — H.O. Hirt and O.G. Crawford — set out to establish an insurance exchange that would prioritize high ethical standards. Their idea was to make good on the Golden Rule, and above all else, practice common sense pragmatism with an unwavering commitment to integrity. After corralling support and fundraising for their venture, they managed to make their entrepreneurial dream a reality and today, the Erie Insurance Group is a network of two thousand agencies. It has a presence not only in its birthplace of Pennsylvania, but also in Maryland, Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
At the time of its inception, Erie Insurance Group specialized solely in Erie auto insurance. Between 1940 and 1954, the enterprise expanded to include fire and inland marine insurance. It wasn’t until 1967 that they had grown to encompass all the extensive insurance options that they have today. They introduced a homeowners insurance policy dubbed the Pioneer Home Protector program, then the subsequent Pioneer Business Protector Policy, and ultimately the Erie Family Life Insurance Company.
Erie Insurance Group is unique in that they conceived their proprietary “Super Standard Auto Policy” in their early years, and the features that they incorporated into this coverage have survived to the present day. This particular template has in fact become an industry standard for auto insurance. They offer customizable flexibility for their policyholders’ needs and the option of over thirty extra features. Standard Erie auto insurance coverage includes property, liability and medical. Also provided is an underinsured motorist insurance in the event that a driver crashes into your car and has insufficient auto insurance to recoup for damages. This specific coverage policy will cover the cost. Discounts on premiums are also granted based on one of many different programs and criteria, such as the Student Driver Discount, Safe Car Driver, Age 55 and Over, Auto Accident Prevention Course, Multi-Policy Discount and Multi-Car Discount.
With its establishment in eleven states in the U.S. and the District of Columbia, Erie Insurance Group presently handles 4 million policies for auto, home and commercial insurance. It has been rated an A+ (Superior) by A.M. Best with regard to their property and casualty sectors and an A (Excellent) for The Erie Family Life Insurance Company. In terms of revenue, Fortune magazine ranked it in 2010 as the 484th largest corporate group in the United States.
